Interview With Marty Layne Home Education Magazine Helen Hegener 1999
When did you first hear about homeschooling, and
did it seem like a good idea at the time, or was it something you needed
to think about, to grow into?
Let me start by
saying that I am 50 years old. That means that I was a teen-ager from
June 1961 to June 1968. Those were times when the United States was
faced with two large issues involving freedom. These political issues of
the times - civil rights and the war in Vietnam - were part of the air I
breathed.

Best Thing about Homeschooling
*Time to sit and read to your children out loud
*Time to stay in your pajamas all day and play
*Time to watch your children as they put on plays
*Time to listen to your children
*Time to look at spiders
*Time to go for a walk when the sun is shining, or the rain has just started to fall...

Assessing
the Value of Parenting Advice
It’s been a long time since I had little babies
to take care of. But the work I do with new parents reminds me how
confusing, delightful, exhausting and wonderful those times were. In this
column, I hope to shed light on some of the issues that parents face,
especially in the early years. I hope that you’ll find it helpful.

Christmas Read Alouds The
months of Nov. and Dec. bring holidays that celebrate the importance
of love, family, and the re- birth of light. When my children were small,
a big part of our holiday tradition was to read Christmas stories out loud. The magic, the warmth, and the re-affirmation of love that fill these seasonal stories were part of our celebration of the birth of new hope
in the midst of darkness. The ritual of reading these stories at
the same time each year added a sense of predictability and comfort to
the holiday season.

Christmas Songs and Fingerplays
Santa's Workshop
Here is a tall, tall Christmas tree
Trimmed with lights and balls.
(Put tips of fingers of both hands together, palms apart)
Here are Santa's little elves.
They run when Santa calls.
(Hold up ten fingers and wiggle them)

“Summer time and the livin’ is easy….”
When you think of summer, what’s the first thing that comes to
mind? Here’s a poem that describes some of the things I like about summer.
Summer - my favorite time of year
Under the water I like to disappear
Making waves in the water
Making rainbows in the sun
Everyone is happier because they’re having fun!
Running, jumping, dancing, swaying, playing in the sun!
